In ancient Greece, lamps did not begin to appear until the 7th century BCE, when they replaced torches and braziers. Indeed, the very word lamp is derived from the Greek lampas, meaning a torch. The pottery version of a Greek lamp was shaped like a shallow cup, with one or more spouts or nozzles in which the wick burned; it had a circular hole in the top for filling and a carrying handle.
